Your weekly schedule consists of a combination of equestrian related activities and wildlife related activities, in addition to some outreach work in the local community on a Wednesday. Horse riding activities consist of riding lessons, schooling, showjumping, horse handling, natural horsemanship, general horse and equipment care, basic yard duties & management, horse behaviour, trail rides, cross country, safety and of course, horse safaris!

The wildlife activities include game drives and bush walks to raise your awareness and also the awareness of others about the importance of environmental and wildlife conservation. You will be assisted by professional guides who live and breathe conservation, and get to see, first-hand, what methods are carried out in order to make an impact. You will get to see the African Big 5, this includes, lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants and rhinos, whilst on game drives!

You will be given plenty of free time during which you can either take time to relax and enjoy some down time, or it can be used to explore the area around the estate. There are lots of activities to do which can be organised with your project manager, once you get there.

What Will I Be Doing?

You will be staying at the Octhula Bushcamp which is a 30 minute drive through the bush from the equestrian centre. You will be living in individual chalets which accommodate 2-3 volunteers. There is a fully stocked kitchen for you to make breakfast and dinner (lunch is made at the equestrian centre for you) and a viewing deck with incredible views of a waterhole. There is a shared ablution block and even an outdoor shower if you really want to get close to nature and have a luxurious shower under the stars! There is a large swimming pool for you to cool off after a hot day as well.

This beautiful estate is situated on the edge of the town of Hoedspruit, a small, quaint town with the most amazing view of the Drakensberg mountain escarpment. Whilst Hoedspruit is a small, quiet, secure town, it has all the amenities necessary for a comfortable life in the bush, nothing in town is more than 10 min away from you here in the estate. Many families have been lured from their hectic urban lifestyles to our more tranquil, and beautiful Hoedspruit.
