Sports & Community Development

The Zambian educational system doesn’t include physical education so with your help we have started to incorporate this into as many lives as possible. Physical education provides not only, physical health but betters mental health, social skills and team cooperation which students would otherwise lack. This program ensures a general educational approach to physical education.

What will I be doing?

You will be volunteering at five different schools once a week, teaching P.E. and providing new and improved coaching to the sessions. We aim to teach and inspire too so any inspirational methods which they children can relate to, heightens their motivation to join in. You will also get the opportunity to train local teams who are of higher standards and want to excel.

The weekly health club is growing, with volunteers teaching groups of approximately 20 young teenagers about life skills and essential knowledge which they can carry through their life. Previously they have covered topics such as fire prevention, wound dressing, hygiene, a healthy diet and exercise but it doesn’t stop there. Any and all suitable topics are welcomed and discussed in order to help those who don’t have access to this kind of education.

During the holidays you will run the holiday clubs which keep children focused during their time outside school but also helping them catch up if they need. It has proven very effective with ensuring the children enjoy and stay in school.

We welcome new sports too! Talk to your project manager when you arrive and they can help timetable this to your week.

The volunteer house is shared between all the volunteers across the 6 different projects that take place in Livingstone. The Victoria Falls Backpackers Zambia is a well-known and very popular destination within the area with loads of activities on your doorstep. There is a swimming pool, bar, fire pit and a climbing wall. You will be staying in dormitories with shared bathrooms and daily housekeeping with three meals every weekday provided. On weekends you will have access to a kitchen or multiple cafés and restaurants in the surrounding area.

This is a very touristic destination which sits on the boarder of Zambia between Zimbabwe, Botswana, and the tip of Namibia. The staff will be happy to direct you to the popular activities available. They can organise river cruises along the Zambezi River, white water rafting, trips to Chobe National Park in Botswana, bungee jumping, zip wires, swimming on top of the Victoria Falls, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, and many more activities! Despite it being a touristic hotspot, the evenings are relaxed so you can unwind whilst enjoying sundowners the typical Zambian way.
