Teaching & Community Development

Teaching young children in Zambia has proven to brighten their day and give the students more motivation to work. Having international volunteers visit the local school brings diversity to the classroom.

What will I be doing?

You will be assisting the class teacher with general learning. Supplying them with new teaching methods, educational games and management support with classes that frequently consists of 50 students to 1 teacher. You will get the chance to work with students on a 1-to-1 basis to help those falling behind or need a little extra focus. This individual attention can only be provided by volunteers and is so advantages to the progress of the students’ education, the impact it makes is extremely great.

You will also be running after school clubs for children who want to get involved with school outside the classroom. They give the children a chance to use their skills and newly learnt knowledge, in different scenarios to help better their achievements. You will be teaching the alphabet, phonics, spelling, pronunciation, reading and comprehension skills but also develop their physical and art skills so that they get a more rounded education.

If you’d like, there is an option to teaching adult literacy and help those who want to improve their chance of employment, graduate through the adult literacy course which is run on project.

The volunteer house is shared between all the volunteers across the 6 different projects that take place in Livingstone. The Victoria Falls Backpackers Zambia is a well-known and very popular destination within the area with loads of activities on your doorstep. This is a very touristic destination which sits on the boarder of Zambia between Zimbabwe, Botswana, and the tip of Namibia. The staff will be happy to direct you to the popular activities available. They can organise river cruises along the Zambezi River, white water rafting, trips to Chobe National Park in Botswana, bungee jumping, zip wires, swimming on top of the Victoria Falls, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, and many more activities! Despite it being a touristic hotspot, the evenings are relaxed so you can unwind whilst enjoying sundowners the typical Zambian way.
